Dog Breeder in Dessel Loses License Over Animal Welfare Violations; Future of 25 Chihuahuas Uncertain

A professional dog breeder in Dessel has definitively lost his license after authorities repeatedly found violations of animal welfare regulations. The breeder, who currently owns 25 Chihuahuas, including puppies, is allowed a 10-week grace period to sell the animals. According to Ann Heylens from the Department of Environment, this period allows the breeder to find solutions, as pups cannot be sold before eight weeks of age, and pregnant mothers cannot be transported in the late stages of pregnancy. While some of the dogs have already found new homes, the breeder intends to keep the remaining animals, citing their age. He expressed deep sadness and believes the revocation of his license is unjustified. Heylens confirmed that the breeder could theoretically keep all the animals, provided he can care for them according to the standards set by Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen. Failure to meet these standards could result in the confiscation of the animals. In such transitional periods, it is common for breeders to sell animals or work with shelters to find suitable arrangements.
