"Dollar for dollar": Canada enters unpredictable trade war with Trump

A trade war has erupted between the United States and Canada, shattering hopes for a swift resolution after more than a year of difficult negotiations. The conflict intensified over the weekend following sharp rhetoric from both nations' leaders.

On Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump's administration implemented 50% tariffs on more than 500 Canadian product categories. These tariffs affect a wide range of goods, from milk powder and hockey sticks to plywood and dog muzzles.

In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada would impose retaliatory tariffs on American products starting September 8. Trudeau declared that Canada's measures would follow a "dollar for dollar" principle, mirroring the U.S. action. Canada plans to target U.S. steel, agricultural, and electronics products.

The rapid escalation caught many by surprise. Just last Tuesday, Trump had announced that a "deal" was nearly finalized and postponed previously announced tariffs. However, according to Trudeau, the U.S. introduced unreasonable demands late in the negotiations, leading Canada to withdraw its negotiators.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer accused Canada of "last-minute" maneuvering, stating that new demands and the withdrawal of other commitments had destabilized the delicate balance achieved. Reports suggest disagreements over issues like French-language packaging requirements and aluminum trade contributed to the breakdown.
