Dominican Agriculture Sector Calls for Technology and a New Generation of Workers

The Dominican Republic’s agricultural sector says its future depends on finding more trained workers while accelerating mechanization and the use of new technologies. It also wants stronger research and a generational transition in the countryside.

The recommendations came at the close of the 28th National Meeting of Agricultural Leaders, organized by the Junta Agroempresarial Dominicana, or JAD. The proposals aim to raise productivity and competitiveness in the agricultural sector.

One of the meeting’s central demands was an urgent national strategy to specialize and professionalize the industry. JAD President Osmar Benítez said the sector faces a shortage of technicians and specialists in agricultural health, food safety, soil management, irrigation, genetics, post-harvest handling, mechanization and precision agriculture.
