Dominican Cultural Center Launches 'La Cantera' to Support Emerging Artists

The Rainieri Cultural Center has introduced 'La Cantera,' a novel exhibition space designed to spotlight emerging artists and introduce the future of Dominican visual arts to the public. This initiative is committed to identifying, exhibiting, and championing artists with distinct voices and unique artistic languages.

Located adjacent to the center's auditorium, La Cantera is intentionally designed as a smaller venue, approximately 35 square meters. This contrasts with the center's main exhibition hall, which spans over 400 square meters. The smaller scale of La Cantera reduces the production and mounting demands, allowing emerging artists to concentrate their resources on the creative process itself.

La cantera is born with a clear mission: to identify, exhibit, and support artists with an authentic voice and their own language, while contributing to the formation of a new generation of collectors.

The project is founded on the belief that an artist's growth is intrinsically linked to the development of a supportive collector base. The center envisions La Cantera becoming a recognized platform for discovering talent, anticipating that future established Dominican artists will have had their first exhibitions in this space. It also aims to be the starting point for many aspiring collectors.

The series is born from Nazario's personal experience during the pandemic, when he found in the landscapes of the Ojos Indígenas Ecological Reserve a space for contemplation and creative refuge.

The inaugural exhibition at La Cantera is "Visiones de Yauya," by writer and interdisciplinary artist José Carlos Nazario. This collection of four large-format works, created with ink, watercolor, acrylic, and turmeric and coffee washes on paper, draws inspiration from the artist's personal experiences during the pandemic. Nazario found creative refuge in the landscapes of the Ojos Indígenas Ecological Reserve, exploring its springs to develop a visual investigation where memory, observation, and imagination converge to reinterpret a constantly changing territory.

Nazario's pieces do not aim for literal representation but rather reconstruct landscapes through intuition and the subconscious, employing a creative method influenced by surrealist automatism. The exhibition offers a fresh perspective on Punta Cana, moving beyond its typical tourist image to explore a more contemplative and imaginative interpretation of the region. "Visiones de Yauya" will be on display until mid-September.
