Dominican president offers condolences for death of former Qatari emir

Dominican President Luis Abinader formally expressed his condolences for the passing of Qatar's former Emir, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. Abinader signed a condolence book at the Qatari ambassador's residence in Santo Domingo, conveying the "deepest condolences" and "solidarity" of the Dominican government and people.

In his written message, Abinader stated, "In the name of the people and government of the Dominican Republic, I express our deepest condolences for the passing of His Highness the Father Emir. His life and leadership left a profound mark on the history and development of the State of Qatar." He added, "We accompany His Highness the Emir, the Royal Family, and the Qatari people in their grief. May they find strength and solace in this irreparable loss, and may the memory of His Highness the Father Emir endure with honor."

The Dominican president was accompanied by Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez and received by Qatar's Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Yaser Awad Al-Abdulla. The Qatari flag was flown at half-mast at the ambassador's residence in mourning. Hamad bin Khalifa ruled Qatar from 1995 until his voluntary abdication in 2013, handing power to his son Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. He is credited with modernizing Qatar and establishing its role as a key mediator in Middle Eastern and African conflicts.
