Dominican Presidential Hopeful Abel Martínez Calls for Unity to Unseat Ruling Party in 2028

Abel Martínez, the presidential aspirant for the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), has called on his supporters and other societal sectors to unite in building an electoral majority capable of ousting the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) in the 2028 elections. During a gathering with PLD militants and community leaders, Martínez asserted that the country requires a more accessible administration that listens to its citizens and transforms public resources into improved services and opportunities.

"To achieve this, we must unite, work tirelessly, and remove them from power," stated the former mayor of Santiago during an event held at the residence of Edward Barrientos, the mayor of the municipal district of Las Cayas in Laguna Salada. Martínez accused the current government of excessive talk and insufficient action, attributing problems such as the rising cost of living, power outages, citizen insecurity, and a lack of opportunities for young people and workers to the PRM's administration.

Martínez outlined his vision for an administration prioritizing the efficient use of state resources, focusing on investments in infrastructure, agricultural production, education, health, and family-oriented programs. He stressed that educational policies should align with current labor market needs and foster values and skills in young people for national and international competitiveness. He also pledged to ensure timely access to healthcare services and medications, though specific details on funding, timelines, or implementation mechanisms were not provided.

The Central Electoral Board has scheduled the presidential and congressional elections for May 21, 2028. Before reaching the general election, Martínez must first navigate the PLD's internal process to select its presidential candidate.
