Dominican Republic climbs to fourth place at Central American and Caribbean Games with boxing success

The Dominican Republic made a significant leap in the medal standings at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games, climbing to fourth place with a remarkable haul of 27 medals on the penultimate day of competition. This surge, largely fueled by a dominant performance in boxing, allowed the nation to pull ahead of Puerto Rico.

Boxing proved to be a major source of success, contributing seven gold medals. Athletes like Estefani Almánzar, Junior Alcántara, Disney Medina, Miguel Ángel Encarnación, Noel Pacheco, Ricardo Cuello, and Cristian Pinales all clinched gold in their respective weight classes. Almánzar defeated Diana Maestre of Venezuela, while Pinales secured a notable victory against two-time Olympic champion Julio La Cruz of Cuba. Athletics also contributed significantly, with Ferdy Agramonte winning gold in the 800 meters and Marysabel Senyú taking gold in the high jump.

With these victories, the Dominican Republic's total medal count reached 145, breaking their previous record of 133 medals set in Mayagüez in 2010. The women's volleyball team, "Las Reinas del Caribe," also maintained their dominance, extending their winning streak to seven consecutive Games by defeating Colombia. Other sports contributing to the medal tally included weightlifting, karate, sailing, and the emerging e-sports.

As the Games approach their conclusion, the Dominican Republic has further opportunities to add to its medal count. The men's softball team is set to compete against Venezuela in the final, with additional medal chances in athletics and weightlifting, including an appearance by Crismery Santana.
