Dominican Republic registers 817 homicides from January to August 2026

The Dominican Republic has registered 817 homicides from January to August 2026, highlighting lethal violence as a major citizen security concern. Social conflicts are the predominant factor, accounting for 385 cases, or 47.12% of the total. Crime follows as the second leading cause with 212 deaths (25.95%), while legal actions resulted in 156 fatalities (19.09%), and 64 cases (7.83%) remain under investigation.

Monthly data reveals fluctuations in both the volume and classification of homicides. January began with 122 homicides, predominantly from social violence (46.7%) and crime (30.3%). February saw 105 deaths, with interpersonal disputes (53.3%) and legal actions (17.1%) being significant. March recorded 108 deaths, with social conflicts (46.3%) and crime (26.9%) as main drivers.

April presented an anomaly where crime (35.6%) surpassed social conflicts (28.9%) in causing fatalities. May registered 115 deaths, with social altercations (43.5%) and legal actions (30.4%) being prominent. June had 94 deaths, largely due to social conflicts (42.6%) and legal actions (27.7%). July saw a spike to 106 homicides, with social confrontations reaching their highest proportion at 60.4%, alongside crime (26.4%).

August recorded the lowest number of homicides so far with 77 cases, a decrease from July's 106. Social conflicts remained the leading cause (54.5%), followed by crime (22.1%). This month also saw the highest proportion of cases under investigation at 13%. The data indicates a dynamic and concerning trend in lethal violence across the country.
