Dominican Republic to Urge UN to Renew International Force Mandate in Haiti

The Dominican Republic plans to return Haiti’s deteriorating security situation to the United Nations, with Foreign Minister Víctor “Ito” Bisonó calling for renewal of the international force’s mandate.

The position continues appeals made by Santo Domingo to the UN Security Council. In July, then-Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez called for the Gang Suppression Force, or GSF, to retain its mandate and for participating contingents to deploy more quickly. He said security would be essential for Haiti to move toward free elections and rebuild its institutions.

The Security Council authorized the GSF in September 2025 to replace the Multinational Security Support Mission. The new force can include as many as 5,500 personnel and is intended to assist Haitian authorities in fighting armed gangs.
