Dominican women's 4x100 relay wins gold, sets regional record

The Dominican Republic's women's 4x100m relay team clinched the nation's 11th gold medal in athletics at the Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026. The quartet, consisting of Liranyi Alonzo, Fiordaliza Cofil, Patricia Sine, and Estrella de Aza, crossed the finish line in exactly 43 seconds, establishing a new regional record.

Cuba secured the silver medal and Puerto Rico the bronze, both teams finishing with a time of 43.41 seconds. In a close photo finish, Cuba edged out Puerto Rico by a mere thousandth of a second for second place.

For Liranyi Alonso, a 20-year-old sprinter from La Vega, this gold medal marked her fourth of the athletics competition. She previously won gold in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and the mixed 4x100m relay. Alonso has emerged as a significant young talent for Dominican sports, with the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima set to be her next major international stage.
