Don't blame security guard, Jakarta governor tells police to act against Alphard driver

A viral video captured a Toyota Alphard SUV brazenly running a red light at a pelican crossing near the HI Roundabout in Jakarta, directly endangering pedestrians. The incident occurred across from the Pullman Hotel on Jalan M. Thamrin in Central Jakarta.

Eyewitnesses reported that the driver of the black Alphard, bearing license plate D 1828 XHQ, allegedly intimidated a security guard who attempted to reprimand them for the dangerous maneuver. This alleged intimidation sparked a public outcry.

Responding to the viral footage and ensuing controversy, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan stated he had repeatedly reviewed surveillance camera footage of the event. Baswedan firmly supported the security guard, urging that the guard should not be fired for doing their job. He emphasized that the guard was performing their duty to ensure the safety of pedestrians.

Baswedan directed law enforcement to impose sanctions on the Alphard driver, arguing that failure to do so would embolden the driver to believe they were above the law. If this cannot be resolved properly, then the one acting as if they have power, even though they are wrong, must be sanctioned," he stated. Furthermore, Baswedan noted that reports suggest the Alphard might be using a fake or incorrect license plate, a matter now being investigated by the Jakarta Police.
