Don't let extremists ruin national harmony, urges minister

Malaysians must actively safeguard the nation's long-standing harmony and unity against extremist elements, stated Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming. He urged citizens to continuously cultivate national pride, extending beyond the independence month celebrations.

Nga highlighted that Malaysia's strength lies in its diverse cultures, ethnicities, and religions, which should be celebrated as a unique national asset. "We must not allow gangs, extremist groups, to damage the harmony and unity we have long built together as a family of Malaysians," he told reporters.

The minister, who is also the Deputy Chairman of DAP, emphasized that the core message for the independence month is the need to defend national unity and inter-ethnic harmony. He explained that national pride is not merely about flying the Jalur Gemilang but should stem from genuine affection for the country.

"By maintaining national stability, fostering national unity, and defending inter-ethnic harmony, these three are actually the keys to our country's success," Nga stated. He invoked a sense of shared identity, saying, "Malay, Chinese, Indian, Iban, Kadazan, Dusun, and Orang Asli, we are one family. We are relatives."

Nga expressed confidence that Malaysia possesses significant potential for progress if its people unite to preserve national harmony and stability. He warned that the country cannot afford another episode of division, as rebuilding requires the participation of all. "We have one dream, one nation, and one mission. We must foster and encourage this Malaysian spirit 24 hours a day. That is my plea to all Malaysians who love their country," he concluded.
