Don’t put away the umbrellas yet: Storms threaten parts of Croatia

Croatia’s run of hot, sunny weather will give way to scattered showers and thunderstorms in parts of the country, while the south remains under a continuing heat wave.

The east is expected to see temporary cloud cover, strong northerly winds and locally heavier showers before skies clear during the morning. Temperatures there should range from about 18°C in the morning to 28-30°C during the day.

Central areas will begin cloudier, with brief rain and strong northerly winds possible overnight. The northern part of the country could also receive heavier showers, although sunshine should return in the afternoon.

Western Croatia will stay mostly sunny, with only a small chance of local afternoon showers. On the northern Adriatic, the bora could become strong beneath the Velebit mountain range, with storm-force gusts and rougher seas before easing later in the day, according to Petra Mikuš Jurković of Croatia’s meteorological service.

Dalmatia and the far south will remain mostly sunny and hot. Coastal and island areas continue to face heat warnings, including very warm days and nights. Southern temperatures will remain near or above 25°C overnight and reach 31-34°C during the day. A yellow weather alert for wind and thunderstorms covers much of Croatia, while Wednesday is expected to bring the most unsettled conditions.
