Dortmund's pursuit of winger El Mala thwarted as Köln rejects massive bids

Borussia Dortmund coach Niko Kovač had identified 19-year-old winger Said El Mala as a key transfer target, hoping to build his team around the promising young talent. El Mala had a standout season for Köln, scoring 13 goals and providing five assists in 34 appearances, marking him as one of Germany's potential future stars.

Dortmund pursued El Mala aggressively, submitting four official offers. The final bid reportedly amounted to 48 million euros, with an additional 55 million euros in potential bonuses, which would have made him the club's most expensive signing in history. However, Köln rejected all of Dortmund's proposals, signaling their strong desire to retain the player.

The departure of Julian Brandt to Ajax has left Dortmund weakened in attack, and El Mala was seen as the ideal successor. With Köln unwilling to sell, Kovač and Dortmund's management must now shift their focus to finding alternative offensive reinforcements.

Köln values El Mala at approximately 45 million euros and is determined to keep him for at least another season. While they are hopeful of retaining him, the club acknowledges that an exceptionally high offer, potentially exceeding Dortmund's bid, could still force their hand before the transfer window closes. If no such offer materializes, El Mala is expected to spend another season at Köln before a likely lucrative move next summer.
