Dozens of Film Festivals Receive Support

Morocco's National Film Center (CNC) has announced its support for 40 film festivals and cinematic events, allocating a total of 26.46 million dirhams. This funding, part of the "July 2026 Support Session," aims to bolster a wide array of cultural initiatives across the kingdom's various regions.

The CNC's committee convened from July 21-23 to review 55 submitted applications. Chaired by Khadija Elalami Laaroussi, the committee engaged with festival organizers, listening to their project proposals before making funding decisions. This process underscores a structured approach to cultural investment, ensuring a thorough evaluation of each submission.

The National Film Center revealed the results of the "July 2026 Session" for supporting the organization of film festivals, allocating a total financial envelope of 26 million and 460 thousand dirhams for the benefit of 40 film festivals and cinematic events in various regions of the Kingdom, after studying 55 candidate files for support.

The Marrakech International Film Festival emerged as the primary beneficiary, securing 12 million dirhams. Following closely is the National Film Festival in Tangier, which received 7.5 million dirhams. Other significant allocations include 1.2 million dirhams for the Tetouan Mediterranean Film Festival and 1 million dirhams for the Salé International Women's Film Festival. The Rabat International Festival of Author's Cinema also received 800,000 dirhams.

The announcement of these results followed meetings of the committee for supporting the organization of film festivals, which convened between July 21 and 23 last at the headquarters of the National Film Center, chaired by Khadija Elalami Laaroussi, where it studied the nomination files, listened to the organizers of festivals and cinematic events who presented their projects and advocated for them, before deciding on the support requests and announcing the list of beneficiaries.

Beyond these major events, the support extends to numerous national and international festivals in cities such as Oujda, Zagora, Ouzoud, Nador, Agadir, Fez, and Ouarzazate. The funding also targets specialized festivals focusing on short films, educational cinema, maritime cinema, café cinema, and social cinema. These smaller initiatives received grants ranging from 30,000 to 480,000 dirhams, reflecting a commitment to a broad spectrum of cinematic expression.

The distribution of funds across diverse regions and festival types highlights the CNC's strategy to promote cinematic culture nationwide. This initiative not only supports established events but also nurtures emerging and niche film gatherings, contributing to the vibrancy and accessibility of cinema throughout Morocco.

According to the committee's results statement, which Hespress reviewed, the Marrakech International Film Festival received the largest share of the support, after allocating it an amount of 12 million dirhams, followed by the National Film Festival in Tangier, which benefited from 7.5 million dirhams.
