Dozens of hectares burn in Chefchaouen forest fire

A fire erupted in the Khandoq Al-Kahlah forest, located in the commune of Ounan in the Chefchaouen province of Morocco, consuming about 30 hectares of forest cover. The affected area primarily consists of cork oak trees and secondary vegetation. Fortunately, no human casualties were reported.

The fire reportedly began when a well-digging machine unexpectedly caught fire, with the flames quickly spreading to the surrounding forest. Firefighting teams faced significant challenges from the outset due to the rugged terrain, dense vegetation, strong winds, and high temperatures, which hampered access to active fire zones.

Efforts to combat the blaze required the deployment of two Canadair aircraft, which, alongside ground interventions, were instrumental in containing the fire and preventing further spread. This operation averted potentially severe environmental damage to the region.

The forest fire mobilized various concerned agencies, including civil protection units, the National Agency for Water and Forests, local authorities, the Royal Gendarmerie, auxiliary forces, and forest guards, supported by volunteers from the local community. Logistical support was also provided by the Bab Tissa commune, which supplied machinery and equipment to bolster the field teams' efforts.
