Major Italian Cities on High Alert for Incoming Heatwave

Italy is implementing its highest level of alert across most of its major cities beginning Monday in anticipation of a new heatwave. The Ministry of Health has indicated that temperatures are expected to climb into the thirties Celsius, with projections suggesting some areas could reach as high as 40 degrees Celsius.

This heightened state of readiness applies to 25 of the country's 27 main cities. Only Reggio Calabria and Messina, located at the southern tip of the peninsula and across the strait in Sicily respectively, were not included in the maximum alert list.

The recent heatwave has already impacted Western Europe and is now intensifying in Central Europe before extending into Italy. Authorities have placed Rome, Milan, and 17 other cities on the highest alert level as of Saturday.

The Ministry of Health clarified that the highest heat warning signifies that the weather "is likely to have harmful effects on the health of healthy and active people, not just on vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, and those with chronic illnesses."
