DPP Nominates Tung Tzu-wei's Secretary for Keelung Councilor Race

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in Keelung has announced its third wave of nominations for the 2026 city council elections, with Liu Wei-hsun tapped to run for the Anle District seat. Liu, who serves as secretary to Keelung City Speaker Tung Tzu-wei, secured the nomination after Huang Yung-hsiang, initially the primary winner, was expelled from the party on June 30th. Huang was removed based on Article 26 of the DPP's disciplinary regulations, following allegations of illegal profiteering.

The DPP's Keelung chapter held an extraordinary executive committee meeting on July 30th to approve Liu's candidacy. The party officially announced the nomination on July 31st. Huang Yung-hsiang had previously stated his intention to run as an independent candidate after his expulsion. With Liu's nomination, the DPP has now put forward 13 candidates across various districts for the Keelung City Council elections, including incumbent councilors and new faces.

Liu Wei-hsun accepted the nomination with gratitude and humility, acknowledging the significant responsibility it entails. He highlighted his long-standing service in Keelung and the Anle district, stating that his time working alongside Speaker Tung Tzu-wei has deepened his understanding of public service. Liu emphasized the importance of not only identifying problems but also possessing the capability to solve them, and the need for practical action over mere rhetoric.

He committed to holding himself to the highest standards, refraining from using his position for personal gain, and avoiding any illicit benefits. With just four months remaining until the election, Liu asserted his readiness to serve the constituents of Anle, building on over seven years of local service. He aims to enter the council and continue working with Speaker Tung Tzu-wei to secure a victory in 2026 and "transform Keelung."
