DR Congo Superfan Denied U.S. Visa for World Cup Match

Michel Kuka Mboladinga, the devoted superfan of the Democratic Republic of Congo's national soccer team, will not be present to support his country during their vital World Cup clash against Uzbekistan. Mboladinga was denied a United States visa, preventing him from attending the match.

Mboladinga gained significant attention at the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year for his distinctive way of supporting his team. He stands motionless throughout DR Congo's games, a tribute to Patrice Lumumba, the nation's first Prime Minister, who was assassinated in 1961 and is a revered figure.

His resemblance to Lumumba, coupled with his colorful suits in the national colors, makes him a unique presence. Despite having supported the Congolese team in their recent match against Colombia in Mexico, he will not be in Atlanta for the must-win game that could see them advance.

The Congolese Ambassador in Washington, Kapinga Yvette Ngandu, expressed hope that Mboladinga might still receive a visa if the team progresses to the knockout stage. Mboladinga, nicknamed ‘Lumumba Vea,’ has previously been gifted a jeep by the Congolese government for his unique brand of support. His arrival at the World Cup was initially delayed due to travel restrictions related to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has seen over 1,200 confirmed cases.
