Vespa riders take to roads in Rome to mark 80th birthday

Rome is buzzing with activity as it hosts "Vespa Roma 2026 – 80 Years of an Icon," a four-day celebration marking the 80th anniversary of the beloved Vespa scooter. From June 25 to 28, the city's Foro Italico and Stadio dei Marmi have transformed into a "Vespa Village," featuring exhibitions, races, parades, and club events.

Launched by Piaggio in 1946, the Vespa quickly became more than just a mode of transport; it was a symbol of Italy's recovery after World War II. Its affordability made it accessible to a nation rebuilding itself, while its stylish design captured international attention. The scooter's practicality also made it ideal for navigating the narrow streets of Italian cities.

Over its 80-year history, the Vespa has cemented its status as one of Italy's most recognizable design exports. It has graced the silver screen in films like "Roman Holiday," appeared in numerous advertisements, and featured prominently in travel imagery. The scooter has undergone approximately 160 restyling updates and has achieved global sales of nearly 20 million units, with over two million sold in the last decade alone.

Today, the Vespa continues its journey, sold in about 100 countries across Europe and Southeast Asia. Production is maintained through three manufacturing plants located in Italy, Vietnam, and India, ensuring the iconic scooter remains accessible to enthusiasts worldwide.
