Dr. Tang Ha Nam Anh strengthens Vietnam’s orthopedic profile on international academic stages

For nearly three decades, Dr. Tang Ha Nam Anh has combined clinical treatment, research and training with an effort to connect Vietnamese orthopedics to the wider regional medical community.

His international involvement began with the establishment of the Southeast Asian Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Association, or ASSA, in 2013. After contributing to the organization for years, he became its president in 2024. That same year, he joined the standing committee of the Asia Pacific Hip Society. In 2025, he became president of the Southeast Asia Arthroplasty Association.

Holding leadership positions at both ASSA and the Southeast Asia Arthroplasty Association has expanded his role in regional professional activities. It has also given Vietnamese orthopedic trauma a more visible presence in medical exchanges across Southeast Asia and Asia-Pacific.

In 2026, Nam Anh attended major international meetings, including the annual conference of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the International Conference of the Korean Knee Society and the 19th Asian Federation of Sports Medicine Congress, held alongside TOSSM and SMAT meetings.

At the Asia-Pacific Arthroplasty Conference in Kuala Lumpur from August 26 to 29, he presented two reports. One covered a muscle-sparing approach to knee replacement, while the other addressed a minimally invasive approach to hip replacement. His team routinely applies both techniques in clinical practice.

The procedures aim to limit soft-tissue damage, help patients move sooner and support discharge 24 hours after surgery in suitable cases. The conference focused on new joint-replacement techniques, artificial-joint function, implant longevity and the management of complications.

Nam Anh has also worked to make Vietnam a destination for training and professional exchange. Over the years, hundreds of doctors from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and other regional countries have visited Vietnam to study knee and shoulder arthroscopy, SuperPath muscle-sparing hip replacement and Subvastus muscle-sparing knee replacement.

In 2025, he worked with the Asia-Pacific Arthroplasty Society to organize a specialized joint-replacement and joint-preservation conference in Ho Chi Minh City. The event featured 118 speakers, 800 Vietnamese doctors and more than 200 doctors from across Asia.
