Dramatic Scenes at WTA Memphis: Top Seed Alexandrova Collapses, Leaves Court in Wheelchair

Top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova experienced dramatic moments at the WTA Memphis tournament, collapsing on court and retiring from her match due to suffocating heat. The 31-year-old Russian, ranked 19th in the WTA, was competing against 16-year-old Kristina Liutova (229th WTA).

After more than three hours of play, Alexandrova fell to the ground and required intervention from the medical team. Despite attempting to continue, she was unable to proceed and left the arena in a wheelchair. The scenes deeply affected those watching, and her opponent, Kristina Liutova, burst into tears while medics were tending to Alexandrova.

The match was played under extreme conditions, with temperatures exceeding 34 degrees Celsius and high humidity. At the moment of her retirement, Alexandrova was trailing 7-6, 4-6, 5-4 and was just one point away from elimination.

One of the most emotional moments occurred after Alexandrova's collapse. Liutova, her 16-year-old opponent, was visibly upset, crying as the medical team assisted Alexandrova. For Liutova, this was her first main draw match at a WTA tournament and her first encounter with a Top 100 player. The young player appeared torn between concern for her opponent's health and the opportunity to achieve the most significant victory of her career.
