Draw in Yerevan: CFR Cluj holds slight advantage after first leg

CFR Cluj secured a crucial 1-1 draw against FC Alashkert in Yerevan, setting up a tense second leg in their Europa Conference League qualifying campaign. The Romanian side showed contrasting performances in each half, ultimately salvaging a draw.

The Armenian hosts took the lead in the 35th minute when Rafael Jesus headed home a free-kick. Alashkert had earlier threatened with shots from Sabobo and Farayola, the latter hitting the post, while CFR Cluj also had chances through Muhar and Korenica. Despite CFR Cluj's efforts to equalize before halftime, Alashkert maintained their one-goal advantage.

However, CFR Cluj emerged with renewed vigor after the break. Just two minutes into the second half, Andres Șfaiț leveled the score with a well-placed shot after a buildup involving Muhar. The Romanian team continued to press, with Muhar testing the Alashkert goalkeeper again.

The match remained balanced for the remainder of the game, with neither side taking excessive risks. Late chances for Nalbandian and Biliboc did not change the scoreline. The second leg is scheduled for July 30 in Cluj-Napoca. If CFR Cluj overcomes Alashkert, they will face the winner of the match between Tromso IL and FC Hradec Kralove in the next preliminary round.
