DRC: 'Builders' transform Kinshasa's Boulevard Lumumba in sanitation drive

Boulevard Lumumba in Kinshasa is undergoing a significant transformation thanks to a large-scale sanitation operation. Approximately 100 young individuals, formerly involved in delinquency and now part of the National Service as "Builders," are working to restore order along the vital stretch connecting Matete Bridge to Ndjili International Airport.

These "Builders," identifiable by their blue overalls and yellow boots, launched an offensive against public insalubrity on Wednesday, July 15. Armed with shovels and rakes, they are diligently removing tons of accumulated waste from the roadside. This effort not only cleans up the urban environment but also significantly improves traffic mobility, particularly in areas like the Liberté and Kingasani-Pascal markets, where illegal stalls had long caused severe congestion.

The operation has also focused on pedestrian safety. The National Service teams are guiding people to use pedestrian overpasses, which had been largely abandoned in favor of risky crossings over concrete barriers. Residents have expressed enthusiasm for the drastic change in the urban landscape and praised the discipline of the young men reintegrated into civilian life.

However, the long-term sustainability of this initiative remains a key concern. Observers and local users emphasize that the overall success will hinge on the ability of authorities and the population to maintain this newfound cleanliness. Preventing the re-establishment of clandestine markets and illegal dumping will be crucial to ensure the boulevard's lasting improvement.
