DRC opposition coalition rejects Tshisekedi's dialogue proposal

The C64 opposition coalition has issued a strong rejection of President Félix Tshisekedi's initiative for an "inclusive national dialogue," dismissing it as mere "popular consultations."

"The article 64 coalition categorically opposes and strongly rejects the so-called popular consultations initiated by Félix Tshisekedi in place of the inclusive national dialogue," declared Martin Fayulu on Friday, August 28, 2026, in Kinshasa, reading a joint statement on behalf of the coalition.

Opposition figures within the coalition expressed skepticism about Tshisekedi's motives, suggesting the consultations are a tactic to alter the constitution and pave the way for a third presidential term. They argue that the initiative fails to address the pressing issues facing the Congolese people, including war, insecurity, health crises, and social distress.

The coalition further accused the president of seeking to consolidate power and potentially facilitate the "balkanization" of the country. They stated that Tshisekedi's actions jeopardize the constitution, stability, territorial integrity, and future of the Democratic Republic of Congo, asserting that the nation does not belong to him and will not be sacrificed for a third mandate beyond 2028.
