DRC pushes for increased Congolese ownership in mining firms

The Democratic Republic of Congo is intensifying measures to increase Congolese participation in the ownership of its mining companies. The government convened mining sector representatives in Kinshasa to harmonize views on a draft decree that would make this participation a reality.

This initiative stems from a provision in the Mining Code requiring at least 10% of the capital in companies operating within the DRC to be held by Congolese citizens. Following discussions, stakeholders reached a consensus on the decree's importance, agreeing to its signing pending minor technical adjustments. An ad hoc committee has been established to finalize these details.

In January, the Minister of Mines, Louis Watum, had set a deadline of the end of July for mining companies to comply with this national ownership requirement. The reform is designed to bolster the presence of national investors in a sector considered vital to the Congolese economy.
