DRC, UNHCR, Tanzania tripartite meeting stresses voluntary return of Congolese refugees

A high-level tripartite commission meeting involving the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Tanzania, and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has reaffirmed the commitment to the voluntary return of Congolese refugees. The meeting, held in Lubumbashi, focused on the repatriation of approximately 87,650 refugees and asylum seekers currently residing in Tanzania's Nyarugusu camp.

Officials emphasized that the repatriation process will be strictly voluntary, respecting the agency and choices of the refugees. A phased plan for their return to the DRC will be implemented, contingent upon the availability of necessary resources. This approach aims to ensure a safe, dignified, and sustainable reintegration for those choosing to go back.

The eighth edition of this tripartite commission signifies ongoing cooperation between the involved parties to address the protracted situation of Congolese refugees in Tanzania.
