Driver dies after SUV crashes on Lagos expressway

A driver lost his life in the early hours of Saturday after his Honda Pilot SUV somersaulted multiple times on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos State, Nigeria.

Preliminary findings indicate that the Honda Pilot Sports Utility Vehicle involved in the incident suddenly lost control, causing it to overturn multiple times before coming to a devastating halt.

The fatal, single-vehicle accident occurred near Charity Bus Stop, heading towards Iyana Isolo. According to Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn repeatedly before coming to a stop. The impact left the SUV severely mangled, trapping the driver inside.

LASTMA personnel, who were monitoring traffic in the area, responded swiftly to the emergency. In collaboration with officers from the Mosafejo Police Division, they worked to remove the deceased from the wreckage. The operation also ensured the free flow of traffic along the busy corridor, preventing further incidents.

The sheer magnitude of the impact led to the instantaneous death of the driver, whose body became trapped within the severely mangled remains of the vehicle.

Officials from the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit later evacuated the driver's remains to a public mortuary. The wrecked vehicle was handed over to the police for further investigation into the cause of the crash. LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and issued a strong warning to motorists against reckless driving, excessive speeding, and dangerous overtaking, emphasizing the paramount importance of road safety.
