Driver Fined in Latvia for Unsafe Child Transport After Child Seen Out of Sunroof

Latvian police have issued fines to a driver for dangerously transporting a child, who was observed partially protruding from the vehicle's sunroof. The incident occurred on August 12th in the Dobele region when traffic police noticed an Audi driving with the child passenger unusually positioned.

Upon stopping the vehicle, officers identified the driver as a woman born in 1992 and confirmed the passenger was a minor. The child was reportedly halfway out of the sunroof, a clear violation of traffic safety regulations. This led to the initiation of two administrative offense proceedings against the driver.

The first fine, amounting to 30 euros, was issued for failing to transport the child, who was under 150 cm tall, in an appropriate child seat or booster cushion secured according to manufacturer instructions, despite the vehicle being equipped with seat belts. The second fine, also 30 euros, was for transporting a passenger who was not properly buckled up.

State police are urging all drivers to adhere to traffic laws, emphasizing the importance of correctly securing young passengers on both short and long journeys. They continue to observe instances where drivers neglect the safety of their youngest passengers, sometimes allowing them to sit on laps or move freely within the vehicle. Police stress that such negligence endangers a child's life and reiterate that children under 150 cm or approximately 12 years old must use age- and weight-appropriate safety seats or booster cushions and be properly secured with seat belts.
