Driver using ADAS crashes into construction vehicle on Taiwan freeway

A driver in Taiwan has crashed into a construction vehicle while reportedly using an advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS). The incident occurred on National Freeway No. 6 in the Guoxing section. The 32-year-old driver told authorities that he had the ADAS engaged but failed to notice the construction vehicle in the inner lane, leading to the collision.

Fortunately, neither the driver nor the construction vehicle operator sustained injuries. However, the car suffered significant damage to its left side, and the rear anti-collision buffer of the construction vehicle was dented. Both drivers tested zero for alcohol.

The National Freeway Bureau's Seventh Traffic Police Corps reiterated the importance of driver attentiveness. They warned that relying solely on ADAS can lead to accidents, especially in unexpected situations. The police highlighted that failing to pay attention to the road ahead, even with ADAS, could result in license suspension or revocation if serious injury or death occurs.

Officials noted that current ADAS systems have limitations and blind spots. They may not react in time to stationary vehicles, such as construction or broken-down cars, or vehicles moving at vastly different speeds. Adverse weather conditions like heavy rain, dense fog, or strong sunlight can also impair sensor capabilities. Furthermore, the systems can misjudge situations on sharp turns, ramps, poorly marked lanes, or unusual road configurations.

Driving should maintain focus, avoid accidents due to temporary negligence. Using automatic driving assistance cannot handle all emergencies. If you cause serious injury or death due to not paying attention to the road ahead, your license will be suspended or revoked.
