Driver who 'confused' Balkhash with a road arrested

Authorities in Kazakhstan's Almaty region arrested a 40-year-old driver from Taraz for recklessly driving a Mercedes along the shoreline and into the waters of Lake Balkhash. The incident occurred in close proximity to beachgoers, including adults and children, and a video of the event quickly went viral on social media, sparking widespread criticism. A court has sentenced the man to 10 days of administrative arrest, and his vehicle has been impounded. The Zhambyl Regional Police Department's press service issued a stern warning, stating that such violations, particularly those endangering public safety in crowded recreational areas, will not be tolerated. "We warn once again: public recreation areas are no place for dangerous stunts. Any actions that pose a threat to the life and health of citizens will be strictly suppressed, and those responsible will be held accountable in accordance with the law," the statement read. This incident follows a similar case in early June where a 23-year-old Astana resident posted a photo of a car in the water captioned "Balkhash." While that individual claimed the image was AI-generated, police conducted a preventative discussion with him.
