Drone explodes near gas pipeline on Romania-Bulgaria border

A drone laden with explosives exploded near the border between NATO members Romania and Bulgaria, raising security concerns in the region. The detonation occurred in a sunflower field approximately 1,000 meters from a compressor station of the Transbalkan gas pipeline, according to Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev.

The incident prompted an emergency meeting of Bulgaria's security cabinet. While Radev initially withheld details about the drone's origin and type, he described it as a "larger" craft, not a "hobby drone," carrying a "considerable" amount of explosives.

Following an initial analysis of the debris, the Bulgarian government suggested the drone likely came from Ukraine, noting its type is commonly used by the Ukrainian army. However, the Ministry of Defense stated that "nothing currently indicates that this was a deliberate incident."

No casualties were reported. The sound of the drone was reportedly picked up by Romanian border police. Bulgaria has since announced enhanced border monitoring and the deployment of troops to detect and counter drones, a move that follows a series of drone-related incidents in Eastern European NATO countries supporting Ukraine. This includes a recent attack on two Turkish-owned ships in the Black Sea, which injured several crew members.
