New radar post installed at Leipzig/Halle Airport after drone incident

Following a recent incident involving a bomb-laden drone, police have bolstered security measures at Leipzig/Halle Airport by establishing a new watch post equipped with specialized radar.

The radar technology has been installed on the visitor platform of the old control tower. A spokesperson for the Federal Police stated that details are being withheld for operational security reasons. According to the news portal 'Tag24,' the system is an EchoShield radar, capable of detecting approaching drones from greater distances and tracking their flight paths.

This enhanced security measure comes after a drone, armed with explosives and a detonator, was discovered near Ukrainian transport aircraft at the airport a few days prior. The drone was brought down by an airport employee. Additionally, an aircraft collided with an unidentified smaller flying object, possibly a second drone.

The German Federal Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the incidents, examining suspicions of attempted explosive detonation and dangerous interference with air traffic.
