Drone explodes near major gas pipeline in Bulgaria after entering from Romania

An unidentified drone carrying a substantial amount of explosives exploded in Bulgaria on Saturday, August 8, near a critical gas pipeline compressor station. The drone entered Bulgarian airspace from Romania and detonated approximately 1,000 meters (0.6 miles) from the station near the former Kardam border checkpoint.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev announced the incident following an emergency meeting of the Security Council. He stated that the drone evaded detection by radar systems in both Romania and Bulgaria, as well as by NATO's Combined Air Operations Center in Spain. Radev noted that low-altitude flights can be difficult to track with current radar coverage.

Authorities confirmed that the explosion caused no injuries and did not damage any buildings, infrastructure, or nearby agricultural land. However, the blast was audible from a considerable distance, highlighting the quantity of explosives carried by the drone.
