Drone, F-16, and giant flag displays dazzle at Merdeka Run 2026

Jakarta buzzed with energy on Saturday as the Merdeka Run 2026 kicked off, drawing around 12,000 participants for an 8-kilometer race. The event, held in front of the Merdeka Palace, was more than just a run; it was a patriotic spectacle designed to celebrate Indonesia's 81st Independence Day.

Before the runners were flagged off, the skies above the capital came alive. A synchronized drone show illuminated the pre-dawn sky with intricate patterns, including the map of Indonesia, the national flag, and the Garuda symbol accompanied by 'Dirgahayu Republik Indonesia' (Long Live the Republic of Indonesia). This was followed by a powerful display of three F-16 fighter jets soaring over the National Monument (Monas), signaling the official start of the race.

The patriotic displays continued throughout the event. A helicopter carried a massive Indonesian flag across the Jakarta skyline as participants made their way along the 8km route, which traversed key city landmarks like Jalan MH Thamrin and Bundaran HI. The run itself featured various categories, including general, family, master, and wheelchair participants.

Beyond the aerial acrobatics and the race, the Merdeka Run served as the grand finale to the month-long Independence celebrations. The event also featured performances by popular bands Wali Band and Moluccan Soul, numerous MSMEs showcasing their products, and attractive door prizes, ensuring a festive atmosphere for all attendees. Several public figures, including actor Raffi Ahmad and national football coach John Herdman, also joined the run, adding to the event's star power.
