Drone shot down at night to prevent harm to Latvian residents, minister explains

Latvian Defense Minister Raivis Melnis stated that a drone was shot down to protect residents from potential harm. The decision was made because drones entering Latvian airspace pose a threat to citizens, and their destruction is necessary. Melnis dismissed concerns that multiple drones were sighted, explaining that only one drone was detected, and residents may have heard the noise of interceptor aircraft. The drone was shot down near Boževas Lake, approximately five kilometers from the center of Rugāji in the Balvi municipality. The incident occurred in a wooded area, and authorities confirmed that no residents or property were damaged. Emergency services are currently working at the scene. Initial information suggests the drone entered Latvian airspace due to electromagnetic warfare activities conducted by Russia. Military personnel, home guards, and State Police officers are involved in the investigation. Debris from the drone, shot down at high altitude, may be scattered over a wide area. This event occurs amidst reports of widespread drone activity, with Russia claiming to have intercepted 553 Ukrainian drones over its territory and 18 regions, while Ukrainian forces report striking numerous power substations.
