Drone with Explosives at Leipzig Airport Signals New Security Threat

Germany's Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has characterized the discovery of a drone carrying a suspected explosive device at Leipzig/Halle Airport as a "new dimension" in security threats, raising concerns about a potential "hybrid attack."

"Nothing in this case suggests it was the act of an amateur. We are facing a professional hybrid threat, which we must continue to confront," Faeser stated, adding that "foreign powers" might be involved without providing further details. She cautioned that a single security measure would be insufficient to counter such threats, noting the incident fits into a broader pattern aimed at creating a "sense of insecurity" in Germany.

Investigators are examining the drone, which was neutralized after being discovered on Tuesday night, leading to a two-hour suspension of air traffic. The incident also involved a DHL cargo plane that had to divert after a mid-air collision with an unknown object a few kilometers from the airport, sustaining minor damage upon landing in Hanover.

Leipzig/Halle Airport is a significant logistics hub in Germany, playing a crucial role in the transport of both military and civilian supplies to Ukraine, a country Germany has been supporting since the Russian invasion.
