Drones sighted over German military base in North Rhine-Westphalia

Authorities are investigating the sighting of two drones over a Bundeswehr military base in Mechernich, North Rhine-Westphalia. The discovery was reported by the base's security center late Thursday evening. Military police examined the scene, and the case has been transferred to the Euskirchen police department, which has initiated an investigation.

The incident occurred shortly after a separate drone event at Leipzig/Halle Airport. There, a drone equipped with explosives was found near Ukrainian transport aircraft. An airport employee managed to bring the drone down. A cargo plane making an approach had to reroute after the runway was closed, and in the process, it collided with a smaller, unidentified flying object, possibly a second drone. Germany's federal prosecutor's office has taken over the investigation into the Leipzig incident.
