Drug cartel leader Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada sentenced to life in US prison

Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, a central figure in Mexico's drug cartels, will spend the remainder of his life in a U.S. prison. A federal judge handed down the life sentence and ordered the 76-year-old to forfeit $15 billion, representing profits from his decades-long criminal enterprise.

Zambada, who co-founded the Sinaloa Cartel with Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzmán, was apprehended in 2024. His arrest followed an elaborate sting operation where he was reportedly lured to northern Mexico under the pretense of inspecting airstrips, only for his plane to divert to Texas. He had previously reached a plea deal, admitting to drug smuggling and conspiracy charges to avoid the death penalty.

During a hearing in Brooklyn federal court, U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan imposed the mandatory life sentence. Prosecutors described Zambada as "one of the most-if not the most-prolific and powerful narcotraffickers in the world," responsible for sending vast quantities of cocaine and other drugs into the U.S. and ordering numerous murders.

The Sinaloa Cartel has experienced internal conflict and widespread violence since Zambada's capture and following "El Chapo's" extradition to the U.S. in 2016, as factions vie for control. Zambada has requested to serve his sentence in a prison hospital due to age-related health issues, though prosecutors argue he remains a security threat. The Federal Bureau of Prisons will determine his final placement.
