Drug-impaired driver kills one sister, injures another in New Taipei City crash

A tragic incident occurred in New Taipei City when a driver, allegedly under the influence of drugs, crashed into a waiting area, resulting in the death of one woman and serious injuries to her sister.

The 50-year-old suspect, identified by his surname Wang, was reportedly driving after using drugs. While attempting to make a turn at the intersection of Jingping Road and Dayong Street, he reportedly missed the turn, and while attempting to reverse, he struck a curb. He then violently reversed, hitting a motorcycle in the waiting area, causing the two sisters on board to fall.

Instead of stopping, Wang's vehicle then ran over the fallen sisters. The younger sister, 64, sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Her older sister, 71, suffered multiple fractures, including broken ribs and a fractured nose, but was conscious and is receiving treatment at Shuanghe Hospital, with her condition not life-threatening.

Police found drug paraphernalia, including an etonitazene vape cartridge and a smoking device, on Wang. A drug test indicated a positive result for etonitazene. Wang, who has a prior drug offense record, was arrested and sent to the New Taipei District Prosecutor's Office on charges including violating the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act, endangering public safety, and negligent homicide. Prosecutors have requested his detention due to concerns about evidence tampering and the risk of re-offending.
