Drug tunnel connecting Mexico and California discovered; Gavin Newsom reacts: 'Saving countless lives'

California Governor Gavin Newsom lauded the discovery of a sophisticated drug smuggling tunnel spanning the border between Tijuana, Mexico, and San Diego, California. The operation also resulted in the seizure of approximately 1,000 kilograms of cocaine, with an estimated street value exceeding $45 million.

Newsom took to social media to emphasize the significance of the find, stating, "Our state operations are saving countless lives and protecting our communities." He highlighted the California Border Crimes Task Force's role in supporting the discovery and the subsequent confiscation of the illicit drugs.

The tunnel, described as an "excavation type," was found by Mexico's Attorney General's Office (FGR) in the Nueva Tijuana neighborhood. It measured roughly 265 meters (869 feet) in length and extended to a depth of 6.30 meters (20.6 feet). The structure was equipped with lighting and ventilation systems, along with an electronic sliding mechanism designed to transport items between the two countries.

Mexican authorities located the tunnel during an investigation into alleged violations of federal laws concerning firearms, explosives, and health. During a search of a property associated with the tunnel, agents seized ammunition, suspected methamphetamine and marijuana, cell phones, and various documents. Investigations suggest the property was potentially used for drug and arms trafficking activities.

The FGR indicated that the tunnel likely connects to a known street in San Diego. Governor Newsom's focus on the value of the seized cocaine underscores the economic impact of drug trafficking operations in the region and the collaborative efforts between U.S. and Mexican authorities to combat them.
