Drunk driver injures 12 in Albufeira, including two police officers

A drunk driver plowed into pedestrians in the popular Portuguese resort town of Albufeira early Tuesday morning, injuring 12 people, including two police officers. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. when the 35-year-old Portuguese man ignored a police order to stop his vehicle.

Instead of complying, the driver sped off along a street notorious for its bars and nightclubs in the Algarve beach town. He then proceeded to hit pedestrians. Authorities reported that among the injured were two police officers and ten other individuals, all aged between 18 and 22. The interior ministry confirmed that one of the victims sustained critical injuries.

Police stated that the suspect's blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit. He has been detained and is expected to face charges related to causing bodily harm and dangerous driving while under the influence of alcohol. Further details are expected as the investigation continues.
