Drunk driver named suspect in fatal Surabaya hit-and-run

Surabaya police have officially named a 32-year-old housewife, identified as ENR, as the suspect in a fatal hit-and-run incident that occurred near the Grahadi State Building on Sunday. The incident involved ENR allegedly driving her white Mitsubishi Outlander under the influence of alcohol.

The chronological sequence of events we obtained after the examination, the suspect who has now been named as ENR, was driving a white Mitsubishi Outlander with a non-concentrated manner, resulting in a traffic accident by hitting a parked electric taxi on Jalan Taman Apsari.

According to police, the incident began when ENR, driving erratically, struck a parked electric taxi on Jalan Taman Apsari. Following this collision, she fled the scene and continued driving towards Jalan Gubernur Suryo, where she then hit a pedestrian. The pedestrian sustained severe injuries and was later pronounced dead after medical treatment.

From the first crime scene, ENR fled towards Jalan Gubernur Suryo, then hit someone who was behind a pickup truck.

ENR reportedly told investigators that she panicked and fled the first scene due to fear of a mob reaction. Her continued flight led to the second, fatal collision. Police confirmed through a breathalyzer test that ENR's blood alcohol content was 1.06 percent, significantly exceeding legal limits. A urine test for narcotics, however, came back negative.

According to the statement from the alleged perpetrator, who is now a suspect, from the first scene she felt scared, then she fled because she was afraid of the crowd, which ultimately caused the second incident.

The suspect is being charged under multiple articles of Indonesian law, including Article 310 paragraph 4 in conjunction with Article 106 paragraph 1, which carries a maximum penalty of six years imprisonment. Additionally, she faces charges under Article 312 in conjunction with Article 231 for fleeing the scene of an accident. Police have stated the case will be prosecuted rigorously according to applicable laws.

We conducted a breathalyzer test, the result was positive for alcohol, but in the urine test for narcotics, none were found.
