Dubai Police deploy drones, satellite technology to tackle marine pollution

Dubai Police are turning to drones and satellite-linked technology to strengthen the response to marine pollution, including oil spills that are difficult for boats to reach.

The systems were showcased at the Dubai Environment Conference and Exhibition 2026, held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel Dubai on Sept. 7 and 8. They support the work of the Marine Pollution Control Centre, which is using technology to improve how pollution incidents are assessed and managed.

One project is a sampling drone developed by the centre in cooperation with the Drone Centre. It can collect samples at reported pollution sites and support an initial assessment. That helps response teams decide whether boats and other equipment are required.

Dubai Police also presented a larger drone capable of carrying about 40 litres of dispersant. The aircraft can spray the substance on oil spills, particularly in locations that boats cannot easily reach. Officials said the system gives response teams greater flexibility and allows faster intervention. A satellite-connected marine buoy was also displayed at the exhibition.
