Dutch Elevator Giant Reveals How Outdoor Escalators Withstand Torrential Rain

As Taiwan braces for intense rainfall during its plum rain season, Dutch elevator manufacturer KONE has revealed the engineering behind its outdoor escalators' resilience. The company, which supplies systems to major Taiwanese infrastructure like the Taipei MRT, Taiwan High Speed Rail, and Taipei Dome, detailed how its outdoor escalators maintain stable operation even amid torrential downpours and flooding.

Key design elements focus on passenger safety and component protection. Handrails are made from reinforced materials to ensure grip in high humidity, while specially grooved, anti-slip treads significantly reduce the risk of falls on wet steps. Waterproof switches and high-grade waterproof and dustproof enclosures for the variable frequency drives protect the electrical core, allowing them to function reliably in heavy rain.

U-shaped covers at the base of the steps direct external water flow away from the escalator's interior. Water that lands on the steps flows through grooves into side gaps, then down internal drainage channels (separate from oil channels) to a sump pit at the base. This pit is equipped with a liquid level controller and a submersible pump that automatically activates to expel water when a certain level is reached, keeping the machine room dry and the equipment safe.

Xiao emphasized that extreme weather challenges equipment comprehensively. "Considering the local climate characteristics during the product design phase, from material selection to drainage mechanisms, every link is designed to protect passengers in harsh environments." KONE also advises building owners and property managers to proactively reinforce ventilation windows, basement waterproofing, and outdoor rain shelters. While robust design is fundamental, Xiao stressed that regular professional maintenance is crucial for extending equipment life and minimizing damage and failure risks during extreme weather events.
