Dutch intelligence: Security threat in Netherlands most severe in 80 years

The Netherlands is currently facing the most severe security threat in eighty years, according to a stark assessment by the Dutch intelligence services (AIVD). This heightened risk landscape is shaped by a confluence of external and internal factors, demanding heightened vigilance from both the government and the public.

Internationally, Iran has been identified as a primary source of risk, particularly through its sophisticated cyberattack capabilities. The AIVD report highlights that Tehran's targets extend beyond regime critics and Middle East experts to include government employees, with the service noting that the regime is not deterred by the prospect of targeting Western citizens. Furthermore, foreign state actors are increasingly leveraging criminal networks and private individuals for espionage purposes, with several such networks maintaining a persistent presence within the Netherlands.

Domestically, the threat landscape is equally complex. Jihadism remains the most significant terror threat, fueled by online radicalization that disproportionately affects young people. Concurrently, right-wing extremism, encompassing both violent and non-violent manifestations, poses a growing danger. The AIVD also points to the activities of anti-state extremists, including members of the "sovereign citizens" movement, who have targeted journalists and judges. The apprehension of eight such individuals last year, found in possession of weapons and ammunition, underscores the seriousness of this internal threat.

While left-wing extremist groups have been active, their threat level is currently assessed as low by the AIVD, with their activities largely influenced by the Israeli-Gaza conflict.
