Dutch Journalists Discuss Political Assassination and Activism

Veteran Dutch journalist Wouke van Scherrenburg met with younger journalist and communist Bob Scholte for an interview, choosing a hotel restaurant in Doetinchem as the location. Scholte, known for his work with the left-wing media platform Left Laser, traveled from Rotterdam. Van Scherrenburg, who covered Dutch politics for decades, recalled the end of her career shortly after the 2002 assassination of Pim Fortuyn. The conversation quickly turned to Scholte's breakthrough video, in which he confronted Fortuyn's assassin, Volkert van der Graaf. Van der Graaf attacked Scholte during the encounter. Scholte explained his motivation was to understand why Van der Graaf committed the political murder, feeling the act had tainted left-wing and animal rights activism. He admitted the experience left him with "weeks of stomach pain" and that he would handle the story differently now. Scholte, who hails from Groningen, became politically active at 14, reading works by Lenin and Marx, as well as Nazi propaganda manuals, stating an interest in "primary material." Van Scherrenburg, who grew up in a religious household in Ede, shared her own strong sense of justice, influenced by stories of good triumphing over evil.
