Dutch shooting leaves one dead and two police officers injured

Thirty-four people from several countries were detained after a shooting in the Dutch village of Overijssel left a 51-year-old man dead and two police officers injured.

The attack took place at about 4 a.m., when a group of masked and heavily armed men approached a home near the German border. Gunfire erupted, killing the man, who was believed to work as a security guard. Police said officers were fired on as soon as they arrived. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Authorities seized weapons, vehicles and data-storage devices. Residents were told to stay inside and keep their doors and windows closed because other suspects might still be in the area. The detainees include nationals of France, Belgium, Algeria and the Netherlands, leading prosecutors to describe the group as international in character.

Investigators are examining allegations including murder, manslaughter and attempted kidnapping. Prosecutors have not ruled out further arrests. Local media reported a possible connection to Dutch fugitive Jos Leijdekkers, known as “Bolle Jos” and previously convicted for his role in international cocaine trafficking. Reports said the dispute could involve hundreds of kilograms of cocaine linked to a smuggling operation associated with his network, but prosecutors have not confirmed those details.

Assistant prosecutor Monique Vinkesteijn said the house had also been targeted in a shooting last year as part of a “long-running dispute.” Overijssel’s mayor described the incident as “extreme violence” that had shocked the local community and crossed the limits of what the village could accept.
