Dutch university evacuates 800 students from Belgian camp due to suspected food poisoning

Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) evacuated all 800 participants from an introductory week camp in Poppel, Belgium, after around 175 students and staff fell ill overnight. The university suspects food poisoning as the cause, though an investigation is ongoing.

Students began experiencing symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. The university quickly organized buses to transport all participants, prioritizing those who were sick. Students without private transport were taken back to the campus for care.

Local authorities in Ravels, where Poppel is located, offered assistance but noted that the university's organization handled the situation professionally. The food provided to the students came from multiple caterers, offering a range of options including vegetarian and vegan meals.

Both the Belgian Food Safety Agency (FAVV) and the Dutch Public Health Service (GGD) are investigating to determine the exact cause of the illness. BUas plans to contact affected students to check on their well-being and offer further support.
