Earthquake Death Toll in Venezuela Surpasses 6,000

Venezuela is grappling with the aftermath of two powerful earthquakes that struck in June, claiming the lives of over 6,125 people. The seismic events devastated communities, leading to the destruction of nearly 200 buildings, with the La Guaira state being the most severely affected.

The earthquakes left a trail of destruction, injuring approximately 17,000 individuals, while a significant number of people, around 1,400, are still unaccounted for. The impact on housing is immense, with more than 16,200 buildings declared unsafe, forcing a large number of residents to evacuate their homes.

In response to the crisis, many displaced individuals, nearly 24,000 people, are currently residing in temporary shelters. The Venezuelan government has enacted a new law designed to simplify the process of renting housing, aiming to provide immediate relief to those who have lost their homes.

Furthermore, the government has committed to providing 4,000 housing units to earthquake victims by the end of the year. These measures are part of a broader effort to support recovery and reconstruction in the affected regions.
